For the summer of 2024, the cave will be open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until 29 September for pre-booked tours only. Visits must be booked 48 hours in advance either by phone (01383 602365), by email to dclg@onfife.com or by popping into Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries.
Margaret became Queen of Scotland when she married King Malcolm Canmore in Dunfermline around 1070. In 1093, after a deeply religious and charitable life, she died on 16 November, which is still celebrated as her saint’s. She was made a saint in honour of her life and the miracles associated with her after her death.
When she used the cave for prayer, there was a wooded path by a stream at the bottom of the valley with a short climb up to the small cave. Now there is a tunnel with 87 steps leading deep underground. The entrance is at the back of the Chalmers Street car park.
