Dunfermline Carnegie Library & Galleries (DCL&G) is an award-winning museum, gallery spaces, shop and reading rooms all adjoining the world's first Carnegie Library. Situated in Scotland's ancient capital, the museum offers a stunning view across to Dunfermline Abbey. The Galleries bring the past, present and future of Dunfermline – one of Scotland’s ancient Royal capitals – to life, by showcasing historic collections and superb built heritage, and by conserving and interpreting historic objects for future generations.
The Museum Shop is well stocked with a wide variety of gifts and we are thrilled to have teamed up with The Granary to bring you interesting, fresh and delicious food in our new friendly and relaxed café at DCLG. The Granary‘s passion for quality in food and drinks is the perfect match for our 5 star library and galleries and it is open every day until an hour before the building closes.
Come and visit our latest exhibition The Lost Words (until 26 October 2025)
An enchanting exhibition featuring original artwork by artist Jackie Morris and spell-poems by writer Robert Macfarlane – from their best-selling book of the same name. Published in 2017, The Lost Words has been described as a ‘cultural phenomenon’. It has inspired school children across Britain, won numerous prizes, and taken root as an instant classic.
The exhibition features 17 of Robert’s spell-poems – one for each lost word – while Jackie has painted more than 50 beautiful watercolours – using gold leaf to take the viewer on a journey that makes the familiar appear magical once more. As Jackie says, “I want The Lost Words to delight the mind and the eye and send children to sleep dreaming of wild things.”
Inspiring and enthralling for all ages, there’s also lots for little ones to do – from crafts and dressing up as native birds and beasts to enjoying the cosy reading corner.
